Visiting Green Fence Farm
We encourage, even beg, our customers and friends (we've given up on family - they have caught onto that whole "Tom Sawyer painting the fence" trick) to come out and see what we're doing on the farm. Though we can't offer formal tours every day, we are open to sell whatever we have in the frig whenever we are home - just call ahead (202-215-7868). And if you want to see exactly where that chicken or ball of wool came from, take advantage of one of the following free or cheap opportunities:
● Youth tours: As a former Brownie Leader, Kate is keenly aware how much she could charge you to put together an afternoon of activities to keep your troop or classroom entertained - but she'll do it for the same price as she charges for adult group tours plus one free adult for every five children. She is happy to work with you to include crafts or activities geared toward earning badges in the tour.
● How Not to Farm - Daylong Farm Boot Camp: Before you quit that paying job to chase your dream of living off the land, come spend a day with Kate and Nick learning how - but more importantly, how not - to run a small sustainable enterprise. Learn from our many mistakes (if you are lucky, we'll make a few while you're there). Spend the entire day, both working with us and covering every aspect of running the farm, from care of livestock to fencing, to small scale poultry slaughter, to what to tell your mother. We can tailor your day to your particular interests (meaning, no need to kill chickens if it is not in your long term plans). $500 a day for two people, each additional person, $100.
● Saturday afternoon free tours, 2-5 pm: Starting in May, join us Saturdays after the Staunton Farmers Market for informal walks around the farm. No need to call ahead.
● Specialty Group Tours: Are you a member of a knitting group who would like to follow your yarn from sheep to skein? Or of a family looking for photo ops with chickens and bunnies? Maybe a member of a cooking club that wants to gather the ingredients for a truly fresh and local meal? Kate will design a farm tour around your group's special interests. $100/hour for up to ten people, $10 extra/person/hour after that.
