Breaking News.... Like all other major retailers (think Macy’s), we are having a fabulous after holiday sale on all livestock! Check out ’08 born cashmere goats, registered Icelandic sheep, and German angora rabbits. A big THANK YOU to all our loyal Spring/Summer/Fall food customers – at the Staunton Farmers Market, through www.localharvest.org, website readers, Staunton Grocery and Newtown Bakery in Staunton, The Local in Charolottesville, and our oh-so-loyal-and-patient DC buyers’ clubs. Some updates:
· Chicken and/or duck eggs will be available at the Newtown Bakery in Staunton (960 West Beverley St.) until the market opens back up. And, of course, they are always available at the farm. Just call first to make sure we are there (202-215-7868). · A limited number of our famous broilers, stewing hens, quail, and rabbit are also available for pick-up at the farm. Call Nick at the number above. · Call now to reserve a whole goat or (maybe) lamb for Easter. · We are desperately trying to get the quail to start laying again by pretending it is Spring. So far, they aren’t buying it (could it be the frozen water bottles). If we can outwit these tiny animals (with brains as big as a dust speck), we will fill our back orders from Local Harvest first and then make them available through Newtown Bakery. We are sold out of Icelandic sheep pelts and almost out of cashmere goat pelts. Prices will go up next year, so you may want to take a look at the few scrappy ones we have left. Finally, thank you to all those who have sent Kate healing thoughts and wishes. She finished chemo in time to eat hardily through the Holiday season. She has one more surgery in mid-January, then we hope she will be moving permanently off what we have come to call “Cancer Island.” You can see her update from earlier this year here. The real news is that I am actually updating this damned site. Those of you sending me Christmas cards through the summer as a reminder can stop now. I get it. Our son, Austin, who knows what the word “pod cast” means, is going to be taking over management of the website soon. Expect real updates, accurate information, pictures on the same page as the accompanying text, and stunning visual effects that we won’t be able to see because our computers are 200 years old (is their such thing as a “manual PC?” If so, I think I have it). Until then, I am going to start to publish a few updates just so our customers and family won’t think the silence means we have locked ourselves in the goat pen (again!) and call 911. Check out these new sections: About Us has an update that reflects my departure from the real world of regular paychecks, health insurance, and high heels. Rabbit Sales 2007 has information on German Angora’s available now and will have pictures as soon as I find the pluggy thing that makes the pictures go from the camera into the computer. Until then, you are welcome to come to the farm, find me, and I'll show you the pictures on my camera viewfinder. 2007 Sheep and Goat Sales lists the Icelandic lambs and Cashmere kids born this year that we have for sale.
Pastured Poultry contains information on how we raise our delicious broilers, why you should want to eat them, and where to rush right out to if you want to buy some. Essays is just that. And there’s only one so far, so don’t go making a pot of tea and settling down for a nice long read.
