Green Fence Farm combines two treasured farm traditions: Family outings at the U-pick orchards and taking home your first livestock. That's right, we are opening the first, that we know of, u-pick cashmere goat operation (we had briefly considered a u-harvest broiler chicken enterprise, but thought that comgining a family picnic with chicken gutting might not catch on as quickly). For a limited time (probably until the end of March, or until something shiny flashes by and we forget about all this), you can come out and pick almost any of our cashmere does out of the breeding pens and take them home.
This year's crops of does are $250, the year-and-a-halflings (who were not bred last year) are $300, and our proven does, ranging from 4 to 7 years old, are $350. All are bred and our usual $50 breeding fee is waived. The offer is limited to six does. We also have a few bucks from this year's crop for sale ($200) is you can't wait until spring to see what the stork brings you.
Goats are herd animals, so, unless you have some other ruminant for a doe to hang with (and sheep are as good as goats), we will not sell you a single doe.
Imagine the thrill tripping through the breeding pens with your kids, grabbing the doe of your dreams (while avoiding the horns of our stud bucks), and heading back home with a bushel full of goat! Look at the fun the sisters in the picture below are having gamboling through the goat orchard and picking fresh goat.
Seriously, though it is fun to buy a cute goat kid in the Spring, now is the time to make informed decisions about buying a herd. The cashmere is in on these goats right now, and you can see exactly what you are paying all that money for. Heck, if you get to them before we do with our brushes, you can pull $100 worth of fiber off your goat this year. Then come spring you STILL get one, and probably two, cute goat kids to satisfy your yearning for Disney-like farmyard animals.
We highly recommend our cashmere goats for the beginning ruminant farmer or fiber enthusiast considering taking that leap into growing your own stash. They are easy to care for, healthy in the face of Virginia's cold winters, hot summers, and nasty worms, and tolerant of the many operator errors committed here at Green Fence Farm (we'd have killed off a lesser breed YEARS ago).
NOTE: The entire full-time Green Fence Farm staff of human employees will be out of the country and out of telephone range until the beginning of February. We can, however, and will check emails, so please contact us that way for more details on this most excellent deal – or don't get ticked off when we don't get your phone message.
